Earth Safe Finishes is remarkable in both its performance, quality and economy.  By adding your own water or mixing Colorants into various mediums you can save a small fortune but how and what do you use for storage and mixing?
1. Bottle caps are non-recyclable in my area.  I rinse and reuse all kinds of caps as small palettes and mixing trays.  Many times I only need a dab or two of some color making these a perfect choice plus if I forget to clean them and have to toss them it is not a big deal.
2. All kinds of containers from vitamins to peanut butter jars to baby food jars make ideal storage containers.  Make sure your container seals well for long term storage but if it dries out a tad adding a few drops of Extender or even water regenerates.  This is the beauty of waterbased products!
3.  If your container does not seal up well cover it with Press N Seal plastic, works like a gem.
4. Save spray bottles too.  Spraying on Colorant with a dab of FabricMagic is super quick and only costs pennies.  (See the apron in previous blog where I sprayed on 2 colors.)
Take a look at what you are tossing out and recycling and give it another life as a container for art supplies; you can always recycle it later.

Challenge Apron

Challenge Apron

Got the challenge to make an apron for the Long Beach Quilt Show next month out of recycled materials.

Here is mine made from a button down shirt and an old pair of jeans.  Both had some stains on them so I spray dyed them with 2 colors of ESF Colorant then added some stenciling with black Colorant.  Stencils are from Indigo Junction and Craftersworkshop.

Fun and free, what more can you ask?

The “Ah Hah” experience, we’ve all had them and relish them.  You know when things just all of a sudden click.  The light comes on about a new technique, a new material use or product or the answer to your design just appears to you.  Fun, exciting and inspiring…almost addictive isn’t it?

Been thinking about how to have more of these moments and have decided there are a couple of key factors for me.

1. Preparation, trying things out, experimenting, researching

2. Relaxing, not pushing so hard for the answer and allowing things to flow in without stressing.

3. Variety, doing a range of activities many not connected to art at all like playing with the kids, walking the dog, weeding or shopping.  Its like I am absorbing information from an array of sources; very non-linear.

Its also very cool to see someone else have an “Ah Hah” moment which is one of the reasons I like teaching and adore children since they have more of these moments than adults.

The other day someone I know and respect had an “Ah Hah” moment about Earth Safe Finishes Coloring System, way cool.  Once people get it they love it.  Fun to see and even more fun to hear the excitement for days and weeks to come.

I’d love to guide you through this and discuss getting more “Ah Hahs” in our lives.

Go out and do something new and see if you can generate an “Ah Hah”.
